MSS Final Round - Radnor
Radnor Forest, Knighton
James - 20th October
Back to racing archive

Weather was always going to threaten the event, it being October and everything. Word is that this is going to be the coldest winter for a while.. So that means put another jumper on when you're racing the Winter Series!
Anyway, the track was in the huge Radnor Forest near Knighton, we turned up only to be stopped at the gate as the air ambulance was on its way to uplift an injured rider, hope you get well soon!

Pulling into the finish field, there was actually a fair few people here for an MSS race and the weather was just about holding off, sometimes getting a few minutes of rain here and there.

The course was designed by the Midlands and Borders DH club team, it started right up at the top of the hill in the deforested section. A quick sprint into a left hand berm, up a small roll-up and through a rooty section before coming to the fireroad crossing and into the forest, through some tight corners, there were a lot of lines around here and a lot of stumps sticking up wanting to knock your feet off the pedals.
Go over the 2nd fireroad, down a steep right banked drop, over a jump, into an S bermed bend into a jump down into the last section of the forest, right turn into a quick section, you've got a choice of going high here and chance slipping on the roots, or go low and risk throwing yourself off when you land on the jagged roots! Difficult choice. Round a loose corner, again with two lines, the higher one being faster and obviously most risky! Roll the corner again, down the steepest bit of the course, over the small jump and into the finish field. You're now faced with an off-camber muddy straight, some comedy stacks here, into the bombhole, round yet another muddy corner and into the typical sweeping corners to finish!

Uplifts ran smoothly, despite having to push your bike up a massive hill to get there, and no noticeable timing problems during the day!
The course was drying pretty well through the day thanks to the gentle breeze, and some of the sections at the bottom of the course in the woods were almost dusty! Times were 5-10 seconds faster in the second run, probably due to some of the (very) sticky mud drying out.
