Crankworx 2006: Part Five
13th August 2006 - Peter Mozola

It's Friday July 28th, and on the schedule today is the Nissan Biker X. Also known as the 4X. Some of the athletes were overheard moaning about the course, which John Cowan designed and featured some very big and burly jumps as well as a stutter bump section. But once the starting gate dropped, everyone was on the gas and all the complaints were left in the dust.

Lopes airing the doubles

From my perspective this was the best 4X course they have ever built here. There was at least four obvious passing locations and the racers were using them all.
During the seeding runs it was all Jared Graves. The team Yeti rider seemed to have this track dialed.
The ladders clicked down and soon it was just Mick Hannah, Brian Lopes, Cedric Gracia, and Jared Graves left in the starting gate.
When the gate fell both Lopes and Gracia bobbled at the start, Graves leapt out with singular focus.

Gracia - style for miles!

By the first berm Lopes had parked himself on Graves' rear tire and Cedric was in hot pursuit. They tore across the stutter bumps mercilessly but it seemed there was no catching Jared Graves. At the last big table, with just two turns to go, Cedric took a bold inside line snatching second from Brian, Mick Hannah followed suit.

Mick Hannah doubling up

In the end they were no match for Graves, who never looked back and just obliterated the field. However Cedric showed why he has carried the number one plate with a non-stop push to the end.
It put him a second and a half ahead of Hannah, but still left him just over half a second shy of first place.
Brian unfortunately was left eating up all of their dust trails.

Graves takes the win

Ever powerful Graves, making a name for himself
