Duncon Cock, all built up now..

Back to articles
To start I've sorted out a new bike and will be running a long term test on it to see how it holds up, I'll tell you what fails miserably and what deserves your Safeway wages.
After a few years of using and abusing my Base it finally failed, the headtube flared and deciding it's time for a new frame anyway I took a little look around. Seeing as the majority of riding I do involves drops or street riding I wanted something that had aggressive geometry making it easy to manual and throw around but more importantly a frame that can handle abuse. Cue the Evil Imperial, Le Toy and a few others. However I am an average rider and have an average bank balance. The Imperial is a beast of a frame but with a mean price tag to match. I needed something for less than £400. As you may know a little while ago we ran an article on DunCon, new to the UK it seemed that they had provided exactly the frame for me, £80 cheaper than the Le Toy and definitly less tried and tested but does take a 12mm hub for added stiffness. Theres been a bit of chatter about the DunCon Cock being overbuilt and alu and all that, but forget the principles, I liked it and personally I like aluminium.
So I dropped DunCon a line and sorted out a Cock and 12mm Da Bomb bolt through hub. After a few weeks and a little trouble it finally came through a few days ago. The paint job may be controversial but it definitly adds a finishing touch to the frame.

The Duncon Cock, ready to rip the trails..
After cross threading my three peice 24Sevens into the Base I had to sort out some new cranks (Remember average rider, not mechanic) Hearing bad things about the new 24Seven cranks I sorted out a Saint crankset which I think is within most riders budgets. I've heard nothing but good things about these cranks and am looking forward to seeing how they hold up. One thing I have to mention is when considering these cranks remember your normal BB tool wont work, you will need a new tool aswell as a new crank extractor. Thanks Shimano.

Bombproof Saint crankset ready for some hard riding
Right just to sum up the rest of the components i'm using, theres a Hope mini on the back, brakeless on the front. Some Drop-Offs at the front supported by a FSA Pig headset, cheap and effective. Combat rim on Diatech 36h hub at the front, Atomlab Trailpimp on Da Bomb Head Spin at the back. Tyres are the original 2.1 Tioga Factory DH's, soon to be changed for something a little more shore and street friendly. An Azonic Loveseat for massive ball protection. A traditional World Force stem with Azonic double wall bars. Tiagra deraileur, heard it was good, still think the LX was better. Theres an LX shifter up front to provide a decent shift, providing I ever get the gears sorted out.

Proven Hope Mini for good braking performace
As I said I am an average rider and thats what it's all about, riding a bike that uses components most guys out there use on a daily basis and can afford. I'll keep you posted on how it all goes.
